A true renaissance man to the core, owner and creative mind behind J.Holden Designs, Johnathan Holden, introduces his industrial line of male accessories and furniture pieces to The Squirrel Co. readers.
Inspired by the vibrant yet modest characteristics of the city of Los Angeles, J. Holden Designs brings elegance as well as texture to its collection of shadow box pendants. With pieces such as the screw or switch blade necklace, it is easy to see the impact that the city and its surroundings had on the creation of each individual piece. “I feel like my pieces reflect the combination of the raw beauty in the industrial parts of LA with the materials I use (copper, resin, brass) and the different ways I form my pieces,” says Holden.
If that isn’t impressive enough, J. Holden Designs also produces original and unique furniture pieces– from beer caddies to beer coasters– proving to be a great addition to any gentleman’s home! In exposing the true raw beauty of the materials used, Holden’s collection of handmade furniture demonstrate his dedication to genuine craftsmanship and quality handwork. And for those looking to make more of a statement with larger furniture pieces, no worries! J. Holden Designs is working on producing, “larger scale pieces and pieces that are more one of a kind.”
Bringing industrial qualities of the city to life and executing it in refined design, Holden’s collection of accessories and furniture serves as a tribute to the raw yet elegant beauty of Los Angeles– a quality we, here at The Squirrel Co., definitely appreciate!

So you thought summer in Los Angeles couldn’t get any better…
This Saturday, July 28th, Los Angeles County alongside the City of Los Angeles come together in a joint effort to welcome the community to the newly revitalized Grand Park in Downtown LA! The 12-acre park will stretch from Spring Street adjacent to City Hall to Grand Avenue at the Music Center. Developers have transformed this 4 block community park into an outdoor heaven, including in the ground plans the restored Arthur Will Memorial Fountain plaza, a performance lawn, community terrace and an event lawn.
However, this two-year project comes to a halt this weekend with the park’s inaugural opening ceremonies, first with the National Dance Day Celebration on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and continuing on Sunday with Sunday Music at the Park program from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The National Dance Day Celebration is sponsored by the Dizzy Feet Foundation and will include appearances by “So You Think You Can Dance’s,” Nigel Lythgoe along with a special performance from IRIS by Cirque de Suleil. The celebration will continue on Sunday with unique musical performances brought to you by The Music Center.
Come join The Squirrel Co. in welcoming the newest addition to our downtown community this weekend at Grand Park! For more information on the park and its inaugural weekend celebrations, visit www.grandpark.lacounty.gov.

Inspired by “natural material, simplicity and high quality,” creator and founder Andrew Smith transforms each and every one of his pieces into sheer metal and leather works of art. His company, Object Mfg. Co., is a Los Angeles based company that specializes in a number of products, including wallets, belts, pipes, tables, and furniture, just to name a few. Smith’s passion and devotion to his craft is evident in the fine, high quality character of each of his pieces, making him an obvious hit with us here at The Squirrel Co.
Catching our eye, the stainless steel band ($20) and hand stitched wallet ($25), each demonstrate Smith’s particular attention to detail and to geniune craftmanship. The simplicity of each product illustrates the power of what is pure and sincere in Object Mfg. Co. goods, making for a unique addition to any gentleman’s style. Our favorite part of it all, Smith admits that although he doesn’t try to create objects that are obviously influenced by LA culture, ” the city works its way into my pieces in subtle ways.” A big thumbs up for that one!
